Meta’s app, which has exploded in popularity since its release, amazed the whole world. In just 24 hours, the app had 30 million users, which couldn’t leave its main competitor, Twitter, aside. Here is what you need to know about Threads VS Twitter.
Elon Musk – Twitter’s CEO is considering taking legal action against the app by Mark Zuckerberg – Meta’s CEO. The main reason for the threatened lawsuit is the significant similarities between the apps. For example, the design, functionality and basic idea are very similar, which is the basis of Twitter’s dissatisfaction.
Threads VS Twitter – Alex Spiro
This Wednesday, Twitter’s Alex Spiro sent a letter to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, accusing Meta of “systematically, deliberately and illegally misappropriating trade secrets and other intellectual property of Twitter” to create Threads.
At the same time, there are a few key points that may seriously affect this dispute. For example, copyright law in the US does not protect the rights of an idea, which in turn will make it much harder for Twitter to prove. Thus, in order to succeed in the court case it will be necessary to prove that Twitter’s code was used to develop Threads.
The situation for Meta, on the other hand, is much more favourable. For example, since 2012 Meta was granted a patent for “communicating a newsfeed”. Also in response to accusations of using Twitter’s trade secrets, Meta’s spokesperson Andy Stone posted that “no one on the Threads engineering team is a former Twitter employee – that’s just not a thing”
This whole situation has been triggered by Threads’ high rate of popularity recruitment, which may be linked to Twitter. So the big question for us will remain whether the court will admit the use of Twitter’s reputation and the similarity of Zuckerberg’s app. Or will it find insufficient evidence of the use of Twitter’s commercial secrets and the popularity will be recognised because of other Meta products, like Facebook and Instagram.
