Meta launches Twitter rival this week

Facebook and Instagram owner Meta has announced that it will be launching its new platform called Threads this week.

Dubbed a big rival to Twitter, Threads is described as a text based conversation app, and the dashboard looks very similar to Twitter.

It is currently available for pre-order on the app store, and the date of launch is penned as Thursday 6th July 2023.

This launch of Threads comes off the back of a number of changes at Twitter by its recent new owner Elon Musk.

Musk has attempted to push Twitter users into paying for the service by introducing the subscription service Twitter Blue for those who would like to display the blue tick verification symbol. He has also announced that the popular user dashboard, TweetDeck will go behind a paywall in 30 days time. There has also been some restriction on the number of tweets users can see, another move to push people into signing up to the paid subscription.

It is thought that the new platform will be a free service, and therefore will highlight a stark contrast between the two platforms. It will be interesting to see if this attracts those users of Twitter who are unhappy with the recent changes.

This isn’t the beginning of a battle between Musk and Zuckerberg, after rumours emerged that the two were going to fight in a boxing match. Nothing official has come from the rumour.

The world of social media is continuing to grow and new platforms popping up left right and centre, therefore its highly likely more is to come from this story.
