Settlement for The Weeknd in copyright claim

Popstar The Weeknd has settled a claim made against him over his hit ‘Call Out My Name’. In this post we will discuss The Weekend copyright claim.

The claim was filed in the US, by musicians Suniel Fox and Henry Strange. The claim alleged that their track called ‘Vibeking’ had been copied by The Weeknd.

The Weekend Copyright Claim

The claim continued by stating that two songs contained similar “lead guitar and vocal hooks”, and such similarities were sufficient for a copyright claim.

Call Out My Name was a top 10 hit for The Weeknd in 2018 in both the UK and US. The star denied any wrongdoing in respect of the claim filed.

An element which isn’t common with famous song copyright claims, Fox and Strange claimed to hold evidence that The Weeknd had prior knowledge of their song prior to the release of ‘Call Out My Name’. The claim stated that their track was sent to The Weeknd’s DJ and playback engineer Eric White in 2015 by email, receipt of which was acknowledged. It was also confirmed by email that the track had been sent to The Weeknd.

As the claim had settled for an undisclosed fee, we will not hear a full response from The Weeknd who denied any wrongdoing.

The initial claim has now been discontinued. It did seek the payment of a share of past and future royalties so we can only imagine the level of any settlement fee.
