Sheeran second success: NY court awards win in copyright claim

This claim, filed in the US, focused on the hit, ‘Thinking Out Loud’.

The claim was filed by heirs of Gaye’s co-writer who argued that ‘Thinking Out Loud’ was too similar to Gaye’s hit ‘Let’s get it on’ and therefore Sheeran, Warner Music Group and Sony Music Publishing were liable.

After a hearing which involved bold claims of quitting music by Sheeran, as well as some guitar playing, the Jury made their decision.

Ed Sheeran New York Copyright Case

In the US, most matters related to the Ed Sheeran copyright claim are dealt with by way of a jury verdict. This differs from the UK whereby only criminal matters are dealt with by way of a jury.
