Social media giants up against GPS patent claim

Social media companies, Facebook and Snap Inc have been hit with patent infringement claims in respect of GPS technology.

Company subsidiaries Snapchat and Instagram were included in the claims, therefore spreading the claim across some of the most used social media platforms.

The claims were filed by Corrino Holdings who are based in the US.

There were a number of patents indicated in the claims, all relating to technology that notified users of nearby services and offers a search for services within the user’s location.

The claim against Facebook states that the patents have been infringed as Facebook has created and offered apps which incorporate such GPS technology. The same claim was made in respect of Instagram.

The claim against Snap Inc differed in that the patents claimed to be infringed relate to location targeting and the provision of adverts that relate to this location information collected.

The four claims in total were filed in the US and are in their infancy, so it will be interested to see how this develops and whether it will ever reach a court room.
