Humankind will never be able to truly understand the infinite capabilities of the brain. A part of the brain tissue the size of a grain of sand contains 100,000 neurons and 1 billion communications. The storage capacity of our brain is considered to be practically unlimited. It is mind blowing to fathom the remarkable nature of our brain.

The abilities of the brain extend far beyond basic motor functions to producing thoughts, opinions and perceptions as well as developing innovative ideas. Such functions can be described vaguely as ‘consciousness’ and ‘self-awareness’.
Advantages of Replicating the Human Brain
The benefits of replicating the human brain’s abilities stem from philosophical and academic viewpoints such as human consciousness to the more practical uses comparable to overseeing exceptionally challenging tasks effectively.
These benefits create an urge in the AI industry to not only mirror the brain’s capabilities, but to outperform them. AI has already demonstrated physical capabilities of human body parts such as being able to detect their environment. It is only a matter of time before AI completely replicates or even surpasses the human sensory system.
To understand the nature of the task at hand we must compare the learning processes of both AI and the human brain.
Process of AI and Brain
Deep learning is the closest form of imitation on how the brain functions. This includes a subset of machine learning in which electrical networks emulate the inside activity of the human brain to process large amount of data and learn from that data. This form of AI learning is responsible for considerable progression in the field of AI. From deep learning AI is now capable of unsupervised learning from large sets of data. These sources of data are so extensive that it would take years for humans to understand and extract relevant information whereas deep learning enables AI to interpret data at astonishing speeds.
However, modern AI actively requires several megawatts to function and such data sets can occupy entire buildings. Compared to the brain which only utilizes 10 to 20 watts which is less than what a light bulb uses. The difference in efficiency is obvious and can largely be explained by the hardware restrictions on supercomputers.
The issue of replicating the brain relies on technological advancement which will only come in time.
Proximity of Replicating the Brain
There were around 150,000 AI related IP applications filed worldwide in 2022 with many more to come. With each successful application we are one step close to replicating the human brain and allowing AI to attain human level consciousness.
It would be fascinating to observe such level of advancement in the AI industry to witness the capabilities of AI and how useful AI could be to society. Nonetheless, there are those that are doubtful as to the effort of replicating the human brain completely. This is due to the amount we have yet to learn of the human brain itself, let alone AI.
