Model strikes again: Gigi Hadid comes under attack for sharing pictures on social media again

Gigi Hadid is one of the world’s most celebrated models of the millennial generation. She has walked for various fashion houses such as Versace, Fenty and Marc Jacobs. As a result, it is no surprise that she has 44 million followers on her instagram account which she monitors herself. Â

On 12 October 2018, the Gigi Hadid posted an image of herself on Instagram taken on 11 October 2018 in New York City. Unfortunately, the copyright holder of this image was Xclusive (a photo agency that represents over 40 photographers worldwide). Â

Xclusive brought a civil complaint against Gigi Hadid in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York. Xclusive claimed that Gigi Hadid’s instagram account contained approximately fifty examples of uncredited images of her in public or at other events posted by the supermodel without obtaining a license/ permission from the copyright holders.

As Xclusive believed that these acts were wilful, intentional and with disregard or indifference to any of the rights belonging to the copyright holders. Consequently, Xclusive are seeking a trial by jury and damages for copyright infringement for under the US copyright laws (title 17 of the US Code section 101).Â

No decision has been given by the US court as of yet. However, as this is not been the first time that Gigi Hadid has come under fire for uploading an image onto her social media without permission, (link to the previous article: the court may not be so lenient with her.
