USPTO reveal Apple’s updated smart fabrics patent

Apple are constantly innovating methods that appear more futuristic and their latest update is no different. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office published an application filed by Apple, which relates to their recent smart fabric technology. Simply put, the fabric-based item comprises of a layer featuring a “light-emitting component configured to emit light through the fabric layer in a pattern for a virtual button”.

The patent was not an application but instead a continuation, allowing Apple to update, add or subtract any details regarding specific features, technology or methods that they wish to legally extend onto their current patent application. This could very well present us with a touch-control button, built into our clothing. The patent reads that there is set to be an ‘optical touch sensor’ which will operate through the fabric layer.

Although the design which Apple have in mind may appear slightly ambiguous or perhaps difficult to picture, we can be sure that Apple will not disappoint, if this invention ever enters the market. However, it is a race against time, as Google have recently launched a smart ‘tucker jacket’, in partnership with Levi’s, which can allow a user to “play music and take photos right from their sleeve”. The continuous evolution of technology is unpredictable, fast and in some ways is presenting us with products and services we never knew we needed. Maybe one day, in the upcoming future, taking a picture with your jacket sleeve really will be the norm.
