The $150,000 Instagram post: Jennifer Lopez sued for copyright infringement

Singer-actress Jennifer Lopez has yet again landed herself in hot water with another copyright infringement claim relating to Instagram posts. This time, the actress and her production company Nuyorican Productions are being sued by New York photographer Steve Sands for the unauthorised use of an image taken by the photographer.
The photograph which was shared on Jennifer Lopez’s Instagram account in June 2017, has received over 656,00 likes and still remains on her feed. Photographer Mr Sands claims he did not license the photograph nor did he give consent for Jennifer Lopez to publish it.

According to the lawsuit filed in Manhattan Federal Court, defendant Steven Sands is suing the actress for damages in the sum of $150,000 (£120,000).
This is not the first time the singer-actress has been slammed for copyright infringement. In October 2019, she was sued by image owners Splash News and Picture Agency for $150,000 over a picture she posted of herself and fiancé Alex Rodriguez on Instagram.

To the surprise of many, the individual in the picture is not the owner of that picture – it is the photographer who has taken the photo that owns the picture itself. It is therefore at the discretion of the photographer to decide whether the photo can be posted online.
