Superstar action against rip-off retailer

A clothing retailer has received notice of action instigated by a number of music stars who object to the use of their likeness without permission.

The stars who have come together to challenge the retailer include Jay Z, Beyoncé, Kanye West, Pharrell Williams and Rhianna.

The retailer in question, ElevenParis, has created clothing that bears images of the artists as well as using their names and lyrics from well-known songs to boost sales.

This case reflects a previous dispute that Rhianna won against Topshop for using her photo on an item of clothing unauthorised.

Whilst the retailer, ElevenParis, has not yet made comment on the lawsuit, the artists in question have made a statement.

In this statement they accuse ElevenParis of being ‘habitual, wilful intellectual property infringers that, without authorisation, usurp the trademarks, copyrights and other rights of A-list celebrities’.

In addition to this, the artists claim that the unauthorised use of their likeness also causes harm to their own clothing lines, leaving them with financial loss.

This is a case to watch, firstly to see if ElevenParis respond to the claims and secondly to see if it follows the same path as previous cases including the dispute between Topshop and Rhianna.
