Success for journalist in Libel battle with founder of Leave.EU

Journalist Carole Cadwalladr has successfully defended against a libel claim filed against her by Arron Banks who is the founder of the pro-Brexit campaign group Leave.EU.

Mr Banks filed the libel claim with the High Court in relation to two instances in 2019 where Ms Cadwalladr made comments about him. These comments were made at a Talk and in a tweet.

These comments indicated that Mr Banks had links or had a relationship with the Russian State.

Mr Banks claimed that these comments defamed his character.

The case was considered by the High Court in the January and the decision was issued this week. In her decision, the Judge dismissed the claim and stated that Ms Cadwalladr had reasonable belief that the comments she made were in the public interest. This is a defence to defamation and therefore the claim was dismissed.

There was an indication from Mr Banks after the matter that he may appeal but this was not formally submitted.
