Social media copycat battle is brewing: BeReal v TikTok Now

Over the pandemic, social media engagement hit an all time boom.

One social media giant that hit the big time was TikTok. A new player in the social media game, many people became addicted to watching the short videos posted by the site’s users. These videos includes viral trends, dances and informative videos on a wide range of topics.

Now the hype for TikTok has died down, a new platform has caught the attention of social media users.

BeReal is an app that requests that its users post an unedited and ‘real’ photo on their feed each day. The prompts are sent at random, and the user has two minutes to take the picture. This app was designed to shine a light on some of the problems with other social media platforms, namely that they are too edited and detrimental to their users for promoting perfect life imagery.

Concerned about its popularity, other platforms are now launching copycat features- enter TikTok Now.

TikTok Now has been described as ‘the newest way to be entertained and connect with others on TikTok – a daily photo and video experience to share your most authentic moments with the people who matter the most’.

It is being launched in the US on trial and is yet to hit UK shores, but it certainly one to keep an eye on as to whether we will have the battle of the apps in the Intellectual Property courts.
