SpaceX is well-known for its lack of belief in the concept of patents. Elon Musk previously provided an explanation to this by saying that a patent can essentially be used as a blueprint by China, the company’s “primary long-term competition”, enabling for ease of replication. Back in 2014, Musk stated that ‘technology leadership is not defined by patents’ and made all Tesla patents available for anyone to use.
However, the same cannot be said when it comes to the company’s Starlink antennas, as numerous patent filings were recently published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. SpaceX usually add 60 new Starlink satellites in the Earth’s orbit every couple of weeks.
Prior to the published patents, SpaceX only had one other patent published this year, despite their continuous innovation. All recent patents published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark office were filed back in June. Be sure to stay tuned for any potential patent updates for SpaceX.
