In February and March 2015, the UK Intellectual Property Office completed its third IP awareness survey which looks to highlight the impact that IP has had across the UK in that year as well as specifically looking at the levels of awareness across differing industries and firm sizes.
The results of this will help the UK IPO to target the right sector to raise awareness of the importance of IP across the board.
This year’s survey was sent out by email, unlike previous years, gaining 502 responses from a number of different companies. The report does state that while this does not create a complete representative sample of the wider UK business community, it can give a good indication of the level of awareness in general.
The following statistics were created from the results of the survey, amongst others:
- 94% of respondents thought it was important for businesses to understand how to protect their IP
- 52% of responding firms had protected some sort of IP
- 96% of firms have not valued their IP
These results are encouraging showing that a large majority are aware that IP is important but it is worrying that even with this knowledge, a number of them have still not protected their IP.
The high volume of firms that have not valued their intellectual property is an indicator that more awareness needs to be made of the high value that IP can carry and the importance to be sure of a business’s true value.
Overall, while IP is becoming more important to businesses, there is still a way to go before the majority knows of the true importance and value of intellectual property to your business.
