Inter trade mark battle over Beckham US football team

After a successful football playing career, David Beckham has now moved on to football club ownership.

However, this has hit a stumbling block.

Operating in the Major League Soccer (MLS) form from 2020, Beckham has set up Club Internacional de Futból Miami, who will be known as Inter Miami.

This has sparked Italian club Internazionale Milano known as Inter Milan to enter into a trade mark dispute with MLS who claim the new club infringes their registered trade mark for ‘Inter’.

This trade mark was registered in 2014 in a number of football related classes.

MLS has hit back to this claim, stating that the ‘Inter’ mark is just short for international and is therefore lacking distinctive character.

Within MLS’s claims they detail their plans to file a trade mark application themselves for ‘Inter Miami CF’ which will only add to the dispute.

It is quite possible that MLS have shot themselves in the foot as surely their application will be refused for the same reasons.

This is certainly one dispute that we will keep our eye on the ball!
