The director Ava DuVernay was required to rewrite the speeches spoken by Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma because Speilberg refused to give permission to use the speeches. Dr. King’s estate had sold the speeches to Steven Spielberg…..

Civil Rights and Intellectual Property do not pop up too often but MLK’s estate has successfully sued USA Today, CBS News, and the brilliant documentary series Eyes on the Prize which kept it off the shelves for years. Meanwhile the estate and licensed his speeches for ads by Apple, Mercedes, Chevrolet, and Alcatel.Â
