How to change the ownership of your trade mark

Once a trade mark is filed and subsequently registered, there are very minimal changes that can be made to it.

One thing that can change is the owner of the mark. Trade marks and intellectual property in general can be a big portion of a company’s assets and therefore need to be viewed as a vital part of the puzzle when it comes to company value.

As part of business, assets move between companies in the same group and also are sold to other companies to allow them to build and grow.
When it comes to trade marks, there is a fixed process we need to go through in order to change the ownership of the mark.

It isn’t just the case of notifying the Intellectual Property Office of the change, we need a formal document which sets out the transfer and what exactly is being sold for and for how much.

Once the Office has processed the request, the online register will be updated to the new owner.
