‘It’s not the same as it was’: Harry Styles launches a lawsuit against online retailers for trademark infringement on fake merchandise.

Cheshire-born popstar, Harry Styles, has experienced more success in the music industry over the past decade than the majority of musicians in his categories. Despite his successes, the singer has been unable to protect his merchandise and their trade marks from infringement, as his latest move that has fans talking involves a lawsuit.

In a Chicago federal court, the ‘Fine Line’ singer’s legal team filed a lawsuit with the aim to takedown counterfeit items featured and sold on online websites to attempt to stop the sale of unauthorised merchandise to his fans. Two of these online websites include Amazon and Etsy, arguably some of the largest ecommerce sites out there.

The suit reportedly states that the “Plaintiff is forced to file this action to combat defendants’ counterfeiting of its registered trademarks, as well as to protect unknowing consumers from purchasing counterfeit products over the Internet. It adds that these sites make it ‘difficult for consumers to distinguish such stores from an authorised retailer’.

Within the lawsuit, Styles’ legal team has provided a list of specific URLs rather than vendors or people who are selling the counterfeit and infringing products. They are supposedly taking a legal route that has previously been used by Nike and Ray-Ban to stop similar merchandise sales.

The lawsuit is the latest of legal action taken by artists that have the initiative to remove counterfeit items being sold online. If this one is successful, it could result in a record-breaking decrease in fake merchandise sold online. It will also prevent new products from appearing on online websites in the future as well.
