The anticipated EU Copyright directive which is poised to shake up copyright protection has stumbled, as the European Parliament has failed to approve the draft.
In June the ParliamentÂs legal affairs committee approved the directive to go forward for full Parliament approval.
On vote, the 318 MEPÂs voting against outweighed the 278 MEPÂs who voted in favour.
Therefore the Parliament reflected the wide criticism the directive has received from those in the music and technology industry. 70 internet experts, including Tim Berners-Lee wrote to the Parliament outlining their concerns on the directive.
The directive will now go back to the drawing board and will be reconsidered before another vote in September.
It is difficult to predict how this will turn out, but what is certain is the change the directive will bring will have an impact on copyright protection as we know it.
