Ed SheeranÂs classic track ÂPhotograph has been heavily scrutinised lately, after two song-writers, Martin Harrington and Thomas Leonard claimed that he infringed on a song that they wrote for Matt Cardle called ÂAmazingÂ. Photograph was co-written by Ed and Johnny McDaid who is the guitarist, pianist and backing vocalist in the alternative rock band Snow Patrol.
The suit was reported to be a $20 million dollar claim for damages, which started in June 2016, and on listen does show clear similarities. The Hollywood reporter has purported that last week there were papers filed to finally put an end to this dispute which tried to be buried last year from Sheeran and McDaid when they were reported to have said they wanted the case dismissed on the grounds that the lawsuit was Âreally long and boringÂ. However, there is no clear understanding as to whether a settlement has been reached and for how much.
It has been known for artists to give song-writing credentials to other artists after infringement claims have gone to court so watch this space to see if Sheeran comes forward with any acknowledgment for Harrington and Leonard, but in the mean-time, have a listen to the chorus from both tracks and see whether you think the similarities are enough to warrant an infringement case.Â
