Supermarket giants Asda and Sainsbury’s have been reprimanded by the Competitions and Markets Authority (CMA) for attempts to block rivals from opening competing store in close proximity to their stores.
The Competitions and Markets Authority has issued a formal reprimand after land contracts which placed restrictions on land, and stopped landlords from renting separate units within the same building to their competitors were used by Asda and Sainsbury’s.
Something that also Tesco and Waitrose have been challenged about in the past, the Competitions and Markets Authority said their actions may have reduced consumer choice of groceries and access to cheaper prices. The Competitions and Markets Authority said Sainsbury’s breached the Groceries Market Investigation (Controlled Land) Order 2010 18 times, while Asda did it 14 times.
The supermarkets tried to argue against this, claiming the impact on consumers was minimal, but ultimately the CMA took a stand and issued the reprimand.
Such an action by the Competitions and Markets Authority is part of an overall investigation on supermarkets in relation to high food and fuel prices.
Both supermarkets have agreed to remove the offending restrictions from their contracts and maintain that the breaches were minimal.
With the world in the state that it is in at the moment, the Competitions and Markets Authority are working to make sure that the consumers free from unlawful breaches by supermarkets.
