It has been revealed that a staggering 287 claims for defamation were filed in the Irish courts last year. This figure is comprised of 152 High Court claims and 135 County Court claims, the figures were made available in the Annual Report of the Courts Service of Ireland, available here.
In 2007 there were only 25 High Court claims for defamation filed. The current figure is double that of the statistics for England and Wales. The Irish Times has explained the numbers as being down to the increasing use of social media commentators have suggested that there is little to support this theory.
Overall claims for defamation make a small number of Irish claims in 2017 there were 655,000 new matters. 245,000 were criminal and the remaining 228,000 were civil claims.
