Barry George v News Group Newspapers Limited – Statement in Open Court

A Statement in Open Court (High Court of Justice) has been made in relation to this case which has now been settled without a hearing.

Barry George brought an action for Libel against News Group Newspapers Limited (NGN) over comments made in The Sun and The News of the World relating to his acquittal of Barry George over the murder of TV Presenter Jill Dando.

Having been acquitted by the Court of Appeal NGN made comments relating to ‘a number of matters which has been kept from the jury’ and in relation to Mr George ‘stalking someone else’ [at the time of Jill Dando’s murder].

However NGN stated in Court that it accepts that the allegations were false. It also gave an apology and stated that it had agreed to pay Barry George substantial damages and all legal costs.
