Apple has given notice to end its contract with Imagination Technologies. It designs the chip and graphic technology including the graphics processor unit (‘GPU’) used in iPhones, iPods, iPads, Apple TV and the Apple Watch. Imagination Technologies are concerned as it believes Apple is infringing their Intellectual Property rights.
Imagination Technology has stated: “Imagination believes that it would be extremely challenging to design a brand new GPU architecture from basics without infringing its intellectual property rights, accordingly Imagination does not accept Apple’s assertions.”
In 2016, from Apple alone, Imagination Technologies received £60.7 million in licensing fees and royalties.
