This month (for the first time in its history) the website introduced a policy that complied with copyright rules as defined by the American Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). The site was in the news recently as it was the place where hundreds of naked celebrity selfies were posted.
The new policy
Sets out a procedure whereby copyright holders can send a DMCA takedown notice to the websites administrators, this informs the website that one of their users has uploaded material that breaches anothers copyright and essentially warns them if they do not take down the material they face legal action.

A DCMA policy will assist a website to gain Âsafe harbour protection form legal action and in essence deflects responsibility for the user generated content. (In the UK we have a similar legislation as introduced by the Electronic Commerce Directive ECD).
