Uber’s Licence Renewal in London- REFUSED

Uber the world renowned car-hailing app has a license to operate in London (under the name Uber London Limited) and it is due for renewal on 30 September 2017. In accordance with usual practice Uber submitted an application to renew the license to Transport for London.

The Transport for London has refused Uber’s request and cited that Uber is “not fit and proper” to hold the licence! The reasons cited are that the Transport for London considers Uber’s approach and conduct demonstrates a lack of corporate responsibility in relation to a number of issues which have potential public safety and security implications. The full citation can be read here.

Unless Uber appeal to the Magistrates Court (and it must do so within 21 days of the decision from the Transport for London) it cannot operate after 30 September 2017. If they do appeal then Uber can continue to operate as normal (under the terms of its existing licence) until the appeal is determined.

This is an important decision and other local authorities in England will be watching this very closely. No doubt Uber is likely to fight this vigorously.
