Under a new agreement both the American and the British patent office have agreed to share information on patent application and recognise each officeÂs patent examination reports. It is thought that this deal will aid the long patent application process to be easier and less time consuming.
The scheme will commence as a pilot programme called the ÂPatent Prosecution Highway. The end result of this is significant for anyone applying for a patent because applications can be looked at in a shorter period of time. The scheme mirrors the agreement that the UK Intellectual Property Office already has with Japan and follows the recommendation made by Andrew Gower
“The Patent Prosecution Highway agreement between the UK-IPO and the USPTO will enhance the operational efficiency of both agencies and improve patent quality,” said Lord Triesman, parliamentary under secretary of state for intellectual property and quality.
“Our collective goal is to reduce duplication of work, speed up processing, and improve quality,” said Jon Dudas, director of the US Patent Office.
